This past week, the Forest Hills United varsity girls water polo team competed in two games, going 1-1. On Tuesday night, they took on the Grand Haven Buccaneers and emerged victorious with a score of 11-5. Thursday, they took on the mighty Rockford Rams and sadly lost by nine with a score of 12-3.

As the team headed into Tuesday’s game, they were very confident that they would come out of it with a win, especially since they are now 2-0 versus the Buccaneers.

“I think our game on Tuesday was by far our best game of the season,” senior captain Selina Franovic said. “We finally started making our shots and having accurate passes, and I think we really came together as a team.”

Not only did they pull off a win, but it was also senior night, so that made this game even more important to Selina and the fellow seniors. Despite their rocky record so far this season, they really pulled off an amazing team performance on Senior Night.

“We really came together as a team on Tuesday against Grand Haven,” Selina said. “I really don’t think that there was much for us to improve upon, and it was definitely our best game of the season.”

Selena had a huge game against the Buccaneers as she went on to score four of the teams eleven goals. She always makes an impact on the games, but she excelled on Tuesday. Alongside her was junior Olivia Luplow; Olivia scored a solid 2 goals and had a stellar all-around game. Lastly, junior Sarah Schenck had an amazing game as she too scored 2 goals and had 6 steals throughout the night.

“There was so much positive energy going through our team after the win on Tuesday,” Sarah said. “I’m really going to miss these seniors because we have such a great group of girls going right now.”

Two days after the team’s big senior night victory, they were set to take on the Rockford Rams. Forest Hills was feeling very confident going into the match; however, the Rams are a very good team, and Forest Hills was defeated 12-3.

“Rockford is a very good team to go up against, and they are always a tough opponent,” senior Kara Bolger said. “However, there are some things we could have improved upon, but we are constantly practicing to get ready for districts.”

Once again, Selena had a very impressive offensive game. She went on to score two of the teams three goals and one of them was scored from mid-pool. Not to mention, she had a very solid game defensively as well, recording several steals on the night.

“Selena was very beneficial to our team tonight,” Kara said. “She is definitely a key part of our team, and our team really appreciates her skills and positive energy.”

As the team heads into the latter part of their season, which mainly consists of district play, they will be taking on several difficult teams. However, they have been practicing throughout the whole season and are well prepared for what lies ahead.

“Our team is getting really excited for our upcoming games,” Kara said. “We want to end the season on a good note, and I can’t wait to see everyone step up and play to their full potential in the district games.”

The team’s next games will take place this Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, at Zeeland High School.
