I might be biased, but “I’m in Love with an E-Girl” by Wilbur Soot is a must-listen

Youtuber and Twitch streamer Wilbur Soot released the song “I’m in Love with an E-Girl” early last year. The piece first appeared on TikTok when I began cultivating an interest in various Minecraft Youtubers. I didn’t have the slightest idea who Wilbur Soot was until the song caught my attention; several parts popped out at me through these short video clips, including the melody. Hearing the words “I’m in love with an, I’m in love with an, I’m in love with an, with an E-Girl” replay while scrolling made me realize I had to listen to the full thing.

I recognized the first section of Wilbur’s song. It started with a gentle guitar introduction that relaxed me. I concluded that the song’s intro plays the tune of repeating numerous moments in my head. Soon, various news reports began popping up on the screen, almost unsatisfying the comforting guitar chords from the introduction. These news segments featured explanations on video games and the world of online dating. Although Wilbur’s song is a whole joke and has no factual background, the news videos go along with its title and the lyrics.

The opening lyrics explain someone waking up late at “2:45 pm” and checking their socials. Even though this song isn’t about a specific person, Wilbur seemingly includes this so that the listener knows that the words go along with the plotline; this person is checking their direct messages for a text from the E-Girl in question. Following these lyrics comes my personal favorite part of the song. Wilbur strums his guitar obnoxiously as he sings a widespread “what’s popping.” I feel as if I do this daily. I’ll be singing the song in my head, and I’ll start mimicking Wilburs motions as he does in the music video.

Next to this, Wilbur starts singing his famous line “she’s beauty, she’s grace,” and switching it up at the end, he sings, “she has a profile picture of an anime girl’s face.” This is a line that Wilbur sings in his three most recent songs, changing it up at the end to fit each storyline. Furthermore, Wilbur ties it up with this song’s storyline, the lyrics explaining that the typical E-Boy wants to tie the knot of his “internet connection.” Most apparent, however, was the sudden appearance of a female voice, the E-Girl, to follow along with the storyline.

The music video shows Wilbur—framed on a black and white screen—“crying” in the shower with water pouring over his head. He sings, “these every little slights and insurrection, constant pain in every dimension, my body weeps, disbelief heads suspension.” The joke behind the lyrics is simple; Wilbur portrays a “depressed” E-Boy that is obviously in love with this E-Girl. When I heard these lyrics, I was laughing vigorously.

Another thing that stood out to me in Wilbur’s “I’m in Love with an E-Girl” music video is the way he seems to strum his guitar. As a joke, Wilbur strums his guitar most strangely. Typically, a musician would strum their instrument correctly during the music video. However, in this case, Wilbur seems to strum in a way purposefully fitted to the way he performs. This stood out to me as well as the text on the left side of the screen. Each lyric was written in the text box as the song went on, but Wilbur added touch by typing the lyrics how they are sung and trying to keep up and spelling words wrong.

To sum it up, “I’m in Love with an E-Girl” is now one of my favorite songs next to other Wilbur Soot songs such as “Your Sister Was Right” and “Since I Saw Vienna.” I might be biased due to my love for his music, but overall, I think anyone could enjoy the remarkable tune and possibly even recognize the humor within.
