If the feeling of picnics in flower fields and quiet walks on the beach at sunset—all of the beautifully romantic clichés—had to be encapsulated into a single song, it would have to take the shape of D4vd’s newest song “Sleep Well.”

However, his poetic ingenuity is not restrained simply to the music he releases; rather, it extends far beyond it, pervading into the music video for his songs as well.

Simply listening to the song alone had me smitten with every aspect that made “Sleep Well” the captivating song it is, but if there was one thing that had particularly stood out to me about the song, it would be the lyrics.

In his song, he talks about how, even though he may not be the perfect person, he is still there for his lover—even if it might feel like everything is against them. The lyrics are the epitome of romance. They feel like warmth and safety all wrapped up in one: a comforting sort of love.

Although they are seemingly irrelevant details, they make all the difference in how the video feels; they create that dreamy romantic feeling that the song itself emulates.

Even though the song may tell a story of unconditional love and care, the music video for it tells another story. The “Sleep Well” music video is one of six, beginning with “Romantic Homicide” and ending with D4vd’s most recent “Sleep Well.” Unlike many music videos, rather than simply basing the video upon the general feel of the song, each of D4vd’s music videos connects to one another to form a storyline.

The story follows three characters: D4vd, his lover, and a blindfolded antagonist. Leading up to the “Sleep Well” music video, the other five videos illustrate the rise and fall of D4vd and his lover’s relationship, with the song prior to “Sleep Well” depicting D4vd’s downward spiral in finding other ways to cope.

This, finally, brings the story to “Sleep Well.” Initially, the music video does parallel the message that the song is trying to convey, depicting playful dates between D4vd and his lover. However, as the video progresses, it is revealed that everything that all those moments he had experienced with his lover had all been inside his head. It was all an illusion he had created in his head.

Although the story itself may not be one filled with fairytale endings and happily ever afters, it didn’t make the story any less mesmerizing. Each scene had me entranced by the beautifully cohesive manner in which the video portrayed the story in. The storyline itself had me shocked with each twist and turn that it had taken.

However, more than anything, I absolutely adored the lighting in each scene. For a good portion of the video, it is depicting D4vd and his lover in a dark room lit up only by a projector they had placed in a tent. As a result, it created this blue hue of light dancing all over the room. In another scene, it is just the two characters sitting on a couch in a room lit up by just candlelight.

Although they are seemingly irrelevant details, they make all the difference in how the video feels; they create that dreamy romantic feeling that the song itself emulates. It brings everything all together.

“Sleep Well” depicts love in a cozy, heart-warming way, like a blanket of love enveloping the listener. With each song that D4vd releases, he reveals his aptitude for creativity. So, as I anticipate the release of his next songs, I will happily fall in love with “Sleep Well” again and again.
