Field hockey wins the state championship

The Ranger varsity field hockey team took care of business in their first two playoff games and advanced to the State Championship. In the first game, they defeated Ann Arbor Green Hills 3-1. The three goals were scored by Madison Bunke, Kirsten Fentzke, and Gwyn Ackerman. This quarterfinal win advanced them to the semis against Farmington.

The Rangers first goal was scored by senior Elysee Gerondale at 17:50 with a tip-in from across the field from Kirsten Fentzke. Going into the half, the Rangers held their 1-0 lead. The team controlled most of the game once they figured out how to shut the opponent down. The shots on goal were about 50-20 in favor of the Rangers. The only Farmington score was shot from a corner late in the game, but senior Brooke Buchanan cleared the ball with a few seconds left.

On Saturday, the Rangers played in the state championship against Liggett. Their only loss all year came against Liggett, who previously beat the Rangers 1-0.

The game started off slow until Madison Bruno tipped in a shot, assisted by Madison Bunke to put the Rangers up 1-0. The Ranger defense held strong until late in the game when Liggett finally got one past senior goalie Molly Growney. The game went into a seven versus seven sudden death overtime.

Liggett started off overtime with possession, and then Madison Bunke stole the ball and went down the field and drew a foul. The Rangers now had a corner by Madison Bruno. She inserted the ball into Madisyn Bunke who gave it back to Madison Bruno for the game-winning goal.

This was Forest Hills Central’s first ever State Championship in field hockey.
