Girls varsity soccer defeats Cedar Springs 3-0 behind dominant first half
After an incredible team win Wednesday night over Northview, the girls varsity soccer team was able to get another win Friday over the Cedar Springs Red Hawks.
Junior captain Ally Francisco and sophomores Megan Clayton and Gwen Henderson scored the goals for FHC en route to the 3-0 victory. Junior Hannah Becker and senior Alexa Lauer also made some big plays on the defensive end to limit any Red Hawk opportunities offensively. The Lady Rangers now shift their attention to Monday night, where they will hit the road to take on the Ottawa Hills Bengals.
FHC did a great job of matching the physicality of Cedar Springs, hitting them with quick passes to get around the Red Hawks. The strategy paid off just 13 minutes into the game when Ally Francisco got past a couple of defenders to get the Lady Rangers on the board first. Later in the first half, Megan Clayton put in a nice goal with an assist from senior Kaitlyn Pointkowsky, making that Megan’s first goal of the season. Only 5 minutes later, Gwen had another great shot to make FHC’s lead 3-0. The Lady Rangers went into the half up 3-0, staying solid on both ends of the field.
While the offense was the key to success in the first half, in the second half, the defense really stepped up and came up big for the Lady Rangers. Hannah and Alexa played lights out in net and made some big saves for FHC, as Cedar played with much more aggression offensively. The fresh legs for FHC had an all-around great performance in the last 20 minutes of the game to shut the door on the Red Hawks and win the game 3-0.
The win Friday night puts FHC at 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the OK White conference. The Lady Rangers now take on the Ottawa Hills Bengals on the road. The Bengals are coming off a hard loss against Greenville 6-0, so they will be motivated.
