JV water polo goes 4-0 in East Kentwood tournament and against Portage United
Coming off a tough loss to Rockford last week, the FH JV water polo team hoped to bounce back in a tournament at East Kentwood followed by a trip down to Portage to take on Portage United. The ladies achieved that goal, defeating all three opponents at the East Kentwood tournament and defeating Portage 11-5.
FH started off the tournament with its second win over the Grand Haven Buccaneers this season 11-3. Freshmen Caroline Bell and Emma Fauson were the main offensive scorers and got some help from Sofia Johnson and Rachel Schenk. The team did an exceptional job on the defensive side of the ball, keeping Grand Haven out of the 5-meter zone for three quarters.
The next game for the team was a nail-biting win over East Kentwood 8-6. Rachel Schenk led the scoring with 2 goals, and Sofia Johnson also had multiple goals to lead the scoring. It was a great revenge win for the ladies, as they had previously lost to the Falcons the last two times they have faced off.
The third and final game against FH came against archrival East Grand Rapids. The ladies defeated the Pioneers 7-4 in another well-played game. Olivia Booth and Avery Verlinde led the scoring with a couple of goals each. Sofia Johnson tied a team-high for steals with 8.
The following Tuesday, the ladies took on Portage United and won 11-5. Avery led all scoring with 3 goals, and Sofia was shortly behind with 2. Rachel Schenk also broke the JV steal record, as she now has 88 on the season the ladies closed the game out on a 5-0 run in the fourth quarter.
FH now sits at 14-5 on the season and looks forward to its final tournament at EGR this weekend.
