Spectacular defense leads girls varsity soccer past Cedar Springs 4-0
Coming off its eighth straight win against Northview on Monday, the girls varsity soccer team hoped to carry this confidence into a showdown against Cedar Springs. The girls prevailed once again thanks to some excellent defense. Goalie senior Alexa Lauer played a phenomenal game in goal, holding a solid Cedar Springs offense to another shutout. Senior Ashley Ward and junior Kelsey Toole continued to have their usual offensive success, which was a big reason FHC got the win.
Ashley put FHC on the board just eight minutes into the game with an excellent shot to get the confidence on offense going early. After a couple of minutes, senior Kaitlyn Pointkowsky would score once again for the Lady Rangers with a header off of a corner kick. The team went into halftime up 2-0 on the Red Hawks.
The Lady Rangers started the second half the same way they did the first half. Kelsey Toole had a phenomenal chip shot goal in the first couple minutes to put FHC up by 3 goals. The defense continued to shine, as Alexa Lauer played phenomenal in goal by making some excellent saves off an offensive surge by Cedar Springs. As time was winding down, Hannah Becker scored the final goal in the bottom left corner to shut the door on the Red Hawks and win the game 4-0.
The win puts FHC at 12-2 on the season and 8-1 in the OK White conference. The Lady Rangers will be back on their home turf next Monday when they take on Ottawa Hills. FHC defeated the Bengals last time around 8-0, so the girls will look to have the same success this time around.
