Girls varsity soccer defeats Okemos 2-0 to claim second District title in three years
After one of its best offensive showing of the season on Tuesday against the Holt Rams, the girls varsity soccer team shifted its attention to the District final game against the Okemos Chiefs. The girls came out with a win 2-0, with both goals coming late in the second half. Freshman Lauren Koczenasz provided a bulk of the offense, scoring one of the goals and assisting the other goal to senior Megan Pointkowsky. The Lady Rangers will square off next in a Regional matchup on Tuesday.
The first half was much like the start the Rangers had against Grand Ledge rather than the beginning against Holt. FHC got many opportunities around the net, but the Okemos goalie had an answer and sent the shots back. Okemos had a few strains of offensive opportunities themselves, but the lockdown Ranger defense had an answer every time. The Lady Rangers also struggled to connect passes, and FHC was tied with the Okemos at the half 0-0.
The second half was a much better half for FHC. The Chiefs started off the half with high intensity, looking for an early goal. However, the backline made up of captains senior Chloe Grooters and junior Ally Francisco prevented many opportunities from becoming serious threats. Sophomore Autumn Burns also had some great free kicks that created offensive opportunities in the box. The offense eventually finished its chances late in the second half, as Lauren Koczenasz scored on a great pass from senior captain Ashley Ward. Later, with only a couple minutes left in the game, Megan Pointkowsky would end up scoring off a pass from Lauren. FHC took the win against Okemos 2-0 and won the District title.
This win puts the Lady Rangers at 19-2 overall, and the girls are now aiming to claim their second Regional title in the last three years. To do so, the first step will be beating either the Grand Haven Buccaneers or the Mona Shores Sailors, who play Friday night for their District title.
