Three Rangers advance past Individual Districts onto Regional Semis
The varsity Ranger wrestling program went to Individual districts in Grand Haven and had a total of 14 wrestlers compete. Three wrestlers successfully came out: juniors Caden Jacobs, Bryce Hysong, and Mason Corcoran.
These particular Rangers wrestled against some of the most intense and decorated wrestlers in the state and fought valiantly from start to finish. The eleven Rangers who didn’t place high enough aren’t allowed to wrestle into the next round, and they are done for the season. Sadly enough, this event marked the last matches for all of these senior wrestlers who will likely never compete on the mat again.
In Mason’s 103 class, there weren’t a great number of wrestlers, which gave him an advantage. Although this is Mason’s first year on the wrestling program, he showed experience by taking down one of the best 103 weights in the district to secure his fourth-place spot and ride to Regionals.
Caden finished third at the 125 weight, as he went 4-1 on the day. Caden won his first two matches up until his semi-finals match against Trey Van Hooren of Jenison High school. Trey won this match 7-5 by decision, forcing Caden to wrestle for third. In that match, he pinned his competitor in just under four minutes to punch himself a ticket to Regionals.
Bryce also finished in third place, secured by a clutch 8-5 win against Mike Loney Jr. of Jenison. He also had a big pin over a solid Hudsonville wrestler in just over six minutes, which led to his high-placing finish.
These three will go to compete in MHSAA Individual Regionals on Saturday, February 22 in Grandville.
